Hygge-lism, recharging batteries, and finding inspiration

Copenhagen is a city of contrasts. It is characterised by minimalism, sober architecture, and a muted colour palette. Nature is abundant, and the city is a haven for pedestrians and cyclists. It also holds hidden gems of extravagance and originality, exuding a contagious dynamism within a cosmopolitan culture.

Watercolor painting of a colorful row of buildings in Copenhagen, with reflections in the water below. The buildings are painted in various shades including orange, red, yellow, green, brown, and blue, set against a cloudy sky. The style is whimsical and vibrant, capturing a charming urban waterfront scene. The artwork is signed "Natasha '24" in the bottom right corner.
In Copenhagen, the intertwining canals and beautiful architecture create a picturesque backdrop for the bustling city. Boats navigating through the waterways are a common occurrence, adding to the city's charm.
If you plan on visiting this city or feel like having a quick virtual escape, keep reading while I share some of my favourite places and impressions.

Tivoli- A magical place for the imagination

Tivoli, the magical amusement park in the heart of Copenhagen, is like stepping into a dream world. The enchanting atmosphere, especially during the summer concerts, makes it a must-visit destination for locals and tourists alike.

Watercolor painting of the entrance to Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, framed by lush green trees and bushes. The central arched gateway is made of red brick and has the word "TIVOLI" written above the arch, with a Danish flag flying atop. A tiled path leads to the entrance, creating a welcoming and scenic view. The painting has a soft, whimsical style and is set in a spiral-bound sketchbook. Natasha 2024.
From dazzling lights to whimsical rides, Tivoli exudes a sense of wonder and delight that is truly mesmerising. It's a place where the imagination runs wild. Whether young or young at heart, Tivoli promises an unforgettable experience.

The Museum of Natural History in Copenhagen

This museum houses an incredible collection of animals and plants that will captivate any nature enthusiast. From lifelike taxidermy exhibits of majestic creatures to meticulously preserved specimens and an impressive greenhouse where tropical plants and butterflies live, the museum offers a fascinating journey through the wonders of the natural world.

Watercolor painting divided into three vertical panels, each depicting botanical elements. The left panel shows large, bright yellow sunflowers with bold petals. The center panel features lush, detailed green fern leaves against a muted background. The right panel illustrates delicate black stems with small red blossoms on a warm yellow-orange backdrop. The artwork is vibrant and expressive, capturing the beauty of natural flora, and is signed “Natasha 2024” at the bottom.

Whether you're drawn to the animal kingdom or fascinated by the diversity of plant life, the museum's extensive displays are educational and inspiring (including the most curated gift shop). A visit to this remarkable institution is a perfect way to spend a rainy day.

Additionally, I was lucky to experience the current exhibit and annual global photography competition, Wildlife Photographer of the Year, which provides a closer look at the intricate details of nature's beauty.

A foodie city

Copenhagen is a city renowned for its incredible culinary scene, and one of the standout goodies is the delectable honey. The honey in Copenhagen is truly exceptional, with a rich, complex flavour that reflects the city's diverse floral landscapes.

Whimsical watercolor painting of three honey jars labeled "VALBY," "Honey," and "ØSTERBRO," representing different neighborhoods in Copenhagen. Each jar has a dark blue lid and varying shades of golden to amber honey. A small bee is perched on the middle jar, and dotted flight paths swirl playfully across the pale yellow background. The artwork is signed "Natasha 2024" at the bottom right.

Have you ever tried something so delicious that you just had to declare it the best? Well, that's exactly how I felt when I first tasted honey from Copenhagen.

Additionally, the city's food offerings are outstanding, with a wide array of options ranging from trendy food markets to more upscale restaurants. Whether you're a foodie or simply appreciate good eating, Copenhagen is a must-visit destination for culinary delights.

Colorful watercolor painting of various Danish foods, including cinnamon rolls and open-faced sandwiches known as smørrebrød. The cinnamon rolls are depicted in circular swirls with golden-brown tones and dark blue outlines. The smørrebrød pieces are rectangular, topped with vibrant ingredients like sliced tomatoes, green beans, and a red chili pepper. The background features abstract pastel brushstrokes and grid lines in shades of blue, pink, and yellow. The words "DANSK" and "SMØRREBRØD" are written in gold. The painting has a playful and textured style, signed "NG 24" at the bottom right.

Smørrebrød is like the fanciest, tastiest version of toast I've ever had. People in Copenhagen took this simple dish to another level. Not to mention the delicious Danish pastries that have made Denmark famous worldwide.

Hygge-lism as a life philosophy

Hygge is a Danish and Norwegian word that describes a cosy, contented mood evoked by comfort and conviviality.

Artistic watercolor illustration of the word "HYGGE" in bold, decorative green letters entwined with vines, flowers, and tiny yellow fairy lights. Surrounding the word are hand-painted red-orange flowers and green leaves, creating a cozy and whimsical feel. The sketchbook page is surrounded by art supplies, including paint tubes, a brush, a color wheel, and a palette with various paint colors. The artwork is signed "Natasha Gonzalez 2024" at the bottom.

A cool painting done with gouache, inspired by the Danish concept of hygge.
